Investing in wind and solar will ensure Brazil remains a clean power leader

In 2022, Brazil generated 89% of its electricity from clean sources, the highest share among G20 countries. Hydropower is the backbone of Brazil’s system, but it is recent growth in wind and solar that has been crucial in meeting rising electricity demand. Wind in particular has grown rapidly, generating 12% of Brazil’s electricity in 2022, while solar provides 3%.

Fossil fuels accounted for 11% of Brazil’s generation in 2022, with the majority from gas. With full reservoirs after La Niña, the country saw a record fossil low in February 2023. However, emissions are higher in drought years as fossil fuels are brought online to replace hydro.

As demand increases, Brazil must deploy more clean power to manage hydro variation and keep gas offline.
