Despite a rise in wind generation, gas still dominates

Argentina’s electricity transition has begun. Wind supplied 10% of Argentina’s electricity in 2022, up from only 0.4 TWh in 2015. Coal supplied only 2% of Argentina’s electricity in 2022, but fossil gas supplied 56%.

This reliance on gas is at odds with its neighbours, bar Bolivia – Brazil has 7% of its electricity from gas, Chile 19%, Uruguay 14% whilst Paraguay has zero.

Will Argentina sufficiently use its extensive wind resources to meet new electricity demand and start to reduce its dependence on fossil gas? The IEA Net Zero Roadmap states that non-OECD countries like Argentina should target 100% clean power by 2040 to align with 1.5C.
